Why do you ride?
Riding a bike is the best way to see the world. It’s like absorbing the world in surround sound; it’s front and beside and all around you. Other methods of travel keep the world one step removed, but on a bike, it’s right there. I like to look at people walking dogs and the clouds and other cyclists. I like to turn corners I haven’t been down before and see where they take me.
Best thing about cycling?
What improvements would you like to see for cyclists?
Melbourne has a fairly robust cycling infrastructure compared with other Australian cities, but I’d like to see more dedicated bike lanes and off road bike paths. I’d like owning and riding a bicycle to become tax exempt. I believe wearing a helmet should be optional, not compulsory, and I’d like the government to repeal its ridiculous and ineffective compulsory helmet laws. See Helmet Freedom to learn more about this issue.
Fondest cycling memory?
I have many, but the one that comes to mind as I write this is the hours I spent on a bike at the Burning Man Festival in the USA in 2011. It was the ultimate in bike freedom! I wrote about it for Treadlie Magazine, and you can read about it on my website.
Just do it.
3 things you’d love the world to know about you?
I like polka dots and grammatically correct text messages, but I’m sorry, I don’t like your cat.
