Matt aka Turtle – Melbourne

31 year old pizza maker / red wine drinker / graphic designer / advertising guy who is obsessed with pho noodles, always up for a chat and also goes by the name Turtle in the cycling world.”

Why do you ride?

I ride for a number of reasons. Convenience. It’s actually the quickest way to get from home to work. Riding along the Yarra Trail it wakes me up and I get to enjoy the city on my way to work.  Socially. I ride beach road with my mates at least once a week. Everyone’s so busy these days it’s a great way to keep in touch whilst keeping fit. Coffee always tastes better after a 60km smash fest.

Best thing about cycling?

The best thing about cycling is the sense of accomplishment you get when you realise you’ve ridden across the city or down to Sorrento without a car and it’s just you and your bike.

What improvements would you like to see for cyclists?

I’d like to see cycling become more mainstream. I’d like to see everyone cycling to the cafe on the weekends and cycling to work during the week. It would be great to see Melbourne become a little more like Amsterdam where everyone rides bikes.

Fondest cycling memory?

There’s so many to choose from… but I’d have to say spending a week riding around Adelaide with my best mates whilst the Tour Down Under was on.
Some incredibly beautiful scenery and great weather really made for a great week on the bike.

Cycling tip?

Always keep your tyres pumped up to the recommended PSI!

3 things you’d love the world to know about you?

  1. I grew up in the ‘gold panning’ capital of Australia… Ballarat. Unfortunately I never found any gold so had to move to Melbourne.
  2. I can speak almost 3 words in over 5 languages… including English.
  3. I can remember almost every detail about someone when I first meet them… except their name.
